The Center opened in August 2007, to provide a fully integrated multidisciplinary approach to diabetes care, with all the disciplines required concentrated together at one site and working together as a single team, together with all the requisite equipment for diagnosis and treatment. This enables full assessment and planning and implementation of treatment in a single extended visit to a single site, rather than the traditional repeated visits scattered in both time and place. This approach clearly eases the burden on the person with diabetes, minimizing traveling, time off work, etc. and potentially provides more effective care. Similarly, for follow-up, almost all problems can be dealt with on the spot. Other patient-orientated activities of the Center include support groups and courses on diabetes for people with diabetes and their families, workshops on specific issues, and even a cooking course for diabetes. In addition we run lectures and study days for physicians, nurses and other professionals caring for people with diabetes. The Center is also responsible for the organization and coordination of diabetes care throughout the hospital. The Center is also active in diabetes research with a particular emphasis on organization of diabetes care, prevention of obesity and diabetes early detection and treatment of complications, and new and innovative treatments for diabetes and its complications.
